The roles of aphrodisiacs or foods that heighten sexual desire and pleasure have been known since ages. Researchers have now been able to link certain food components and nutrients to increased sexual function.

Let’s take a look at some common and easy-to-find foods that can help you have a better sex life:

#1 Eggs

Eggs have long been known as a symbol of fertility. Rich in vitamins B5 and B6, eggs help fight stress and keep the levels of hormones in balance, roles that are crucial for maintaining a healthy sex life.

#2 Almonds

Almonds are packed with nutrients and rich sources of minerals like selenium, zinc and vitamin E, vital for overall sexual well-being and fertility. Considered to work as a sex stimulant, almonds enhance sexual desire, though the exact mechanism behind it remains unknown.

#3 Seafood

Probably the most well-known example of seafood aphrodisiac is the oyster. The slippery food rates among one of the best sources of zinc. However, oysters are not commonly found everywhere.

Other types of seafood known for their aphrodisiac quality include oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, the essential fatty acids that clear cholesterol and improve circulation, these fish help maintain the normal levels of various hormones in the body. They also increase arousal through a rise in dopamine levels.

#4 Berries

Cholesterol can kill the mood for sex, and the soluble fibre in blueberries works to clear it from the blood stream. Strawberries, with their red colour act as natural stimulants, and the richness of folic acid in them further wards off birth defects in women.

In men, strawberries are also linked to an increased sperm count. Their benefits can be doubled when mixed with chocolate, also a popular aphrodisiac.

#5 Chocolate

Chocolate is a universally loved food, and its benefits are backed scientifically. It contains phenylethylamine (a chemical that boosts mood and makes a person feel ‘more loved’) and the alkaloid theobromine (similar in effects to caffeine). Further, dark chocolate is rich in anti-oxidants that boost immune system.

#6 Figs

Rich in soluble and insoluble fibres that protect heart, figs have an excellent reputation as a sex booster.

#7 Celery

Celery may not taste as great as other more tempting stimulating foods, but it is considered to be a rich source of androsterone, an odourless male hormone released through sweat, which can heighten sexual desire in women. It is best eaten in its natural form, which is raw after being washed and cut.

#8 Avocado

The avocado tree was called as the ‘ahuacatl’ by the Azetecs, which literally translates to ‘testicle tree’. Avocado is a rich source of vitamin B6 that stimulates male hormone production, potassium that regulates thyroid gland in women, and folic acid that provides more energy by aiding protein metabolism.
