Check out some basic lifestyle changes that can help you control BPH symptoms.
For some men the symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia may not be really severe and they can be controlled with certain changes in lifestyle. You need not go for medications or surgical procedures, if you feel being disciplined with a little bit tweaking in your daily routine can relieve the bothersome BPH symptoms.
- Limit your daily fluid intake to 2 litres at the max.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine in all forms.
- Do not drink any kind of beverages in the evening especially after dinner. This includes water, juices, curd, lassi etc.
- Urinate once every 3-4 hours.
- Double void, which means when you finish urinating, wait for few seconds and try to do again.
- Get some physical exercise and stay active.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Few medications like diuretics, decongestants and antihistamines tend to aggravate the symptoms of BPH. These generally include drugs for treatment of colds and allergies, high blood pressure and depression. Avoid them totally. Speak to your doctor for alternatives.
- Practice the following pelvic floor muscles exercises to strengthen the muscles that support bladder. You may do these while urinating.
- Contract the muscle and hold for 15 seconds or till the urine flow stops
- Release the contracted muscle
- Repeat 10 times more
- Do 3-5 times every day
- Some studies indicate that nutrients such as beta-carotene and vitamin C protect against BPH. Fruits and vegetables such as oranges, spinach, carrots and amla are rich source of these nutrients. Also, replace saturated fats and trans-fats in your diet with healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids.
- Zinc supplements put one at a greater risk of BPH. Before you buy any over-the-counter drug, do read the label.
- Check with your doctor about any dietary supplements that can prove beneficial in managing BPH symptoms.
