If an experienced surgical gastroenterologist advises a surgery, then one should not delay it. The reasons for not postponing this surgery are:

Hernia Surgery is the only solution

One can delay the surgery, and avoid it for some time. However, when it gets worse, the only solution is surgery. The downside of waiting for a hernia to become really troublesome is that larger it becomes, more pressure it puts on muscles and recovery period gets longer.

Procrastinating surgery delays recovery

Patients sometimes delay this procedure by as long as 10 years. It is a known fact, that the younger you are, the faster is the recovery from surgery.

Condition worsens over time

The results can be ugly if a hernia grows and confines to the walls of the stomach. As a hernia gets bigger, its symptoms worsen. This could lead to health problems. Worsening hernia causes chronic constipation, enlarged prostate, recurring cough and bowel obstruction.

It is important that in few instances it is a good idea to postpone the surgery –

  1. The patient is suffering from other ailments which makes it necessary to take blood thinners. These medications don’t stop even for the surgery.
  2. Some serious health problems making surgery not advisable like high diabetes where recovery can be risky in any kind of surgeries.
  3. Allergy or possible infection from the material used for hernia surgery.
  4. Doctors at PSRI  believe that push back arrangement in terms of corsets, help contain the problem.

For the above, it is important to take the advice of an experienced gastrointestinal surgeon. If in doubt, go for a second opinion. Nevertheless, the specialists at PSRI Hospital advise undergoing surgery as soon as possible, in special as well as normal cases.
