While sharing his views on ways to prevent kidney stones, an experienced Nephrologist in Gurgaon says
Kidney stone prevention basically means preventing certain conditions that lead to the development of these chemical formations.
When some chemicals become too concentrated in the urine, they unite together to form crystals which then grow into large masses called stones. Often, stones develop when calcium combines with either of these two substances – oxalate or phosphorous. Uric acid can also lead to stone formation. They usually pass along through the urinary tract but there are cases when they do get stuck and cause pain.
Here are 5 easy ways to prevent kidney stones.
#1. Drink a lot of water
Water is excellent for diluting the substances that form in the urine. It is advised to drink enough fluids so as to pass at least two liters of urine a day. Consider consuming citrate in your fluids such as lemonades and orange juice.
#2. Don’t compromise on calcium
Increase the intake of calcium as its deficiency can cause the oxalate levels to rise which can lead to stone formation.
#3. Control the sodium intake
Too much sodium is not only bad for the heart and blood pressure but also for the kidneys. A diet high on sodium content can trigger the development of stones by increasing the levels of calcium in the urine.
#4. Eat less of animal protein
Red meat, poultry, eggs, etc. can increase the level of uric acid in urine and lead to kidney stones. Also, animal protein can reduce the citrate level which is actually beneficial for stone prevention.
#5. Avoid foods that form stones
Chocolate, beets, rhubarbs, tea, etc. have high oxalate content. Colas have high phosphate content. Both these can cause the formation of kidney stones. Hence, limit the diet which includes these foods.
