Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition which affects women in the reproductive age. It is a hormonal disorder in which ovaries develop a number of small collections of fluid, also known as follicles, and fail to release eggs efficiently.

It can also cause prolonged or infrequent menstrual cycles, acne and unwanted facial hair and increase in the secretion level of androgen, a male hormone.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

Symptoms of PCOS might vary slightly from one woman to another. The severity of these symptoms is also likely to be more in people who are obsese.

The signs and symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome include:

  • Irregular or prolonged periods

  • Excess secretion of androgen (a male hormone)

  • Enlarged ovaries (due to formation of cysts)

  • Darkened skin, particularly in the neck and armpit region

  • Weight gain

  • Pain in pelvic region

  • Extreme mood swings

What causes PCOS?

The exact cause of PCOS is yet unknown, but there are a number of factors that can play a role in this process, including:

  • Higher Insulin production: Insulin is a hormone that enables the cells in your body to use up sugar. It is produced in pancreas. If the cells become resistant to insulin, its level in the body will naturally begin to rise. This causes increase in androgen production, which affects the process of ovulation negatively.

  • Heredity: Researches suggest that if your mother or your sister has PCOS, you are also likely to have or develop it.

  • Low grade inflammation: It stimulates the cystic ovaries to produce androgens, leading to heart and blood vessel problems

What are some of the complications related to PCOS?

PCOS causes extraordinary secretion of androgen, which is a hormone involved in the development of male sex organs and other characteristics, such as facial and body hair. There are various complications caused by PCOS and the resultant increase in androgen, including:

  • Infertility

  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood sugar

  • Abnormal body and facial hair growth

  • Considerable weight gain

  • Acne

  • Darkened skin around neck and armpits

  • Miscarriage or premature birth

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Thinning hair

  • Endometrial cancer (cancer in the lining of uterus)

  • Sleep cancer

How is PCOS diagnosed?

A gynecologist will conduct a pelvic exam, in order to check up on the parts of your reproductive system. For this exam, the doctor will insert gloved fingers into the vagina and check for any abnormal growth.

A blood test is also administered to evaluate the levels of male hormones, insulin, cholesterol levels etc in your blood. Moreover, an ultrasound can also be prescribed by the gynecologist if they detect any abnormality in the reproductive system.

Pratibha

Bangalore

Husband of 20 years old Pratibha (name changed) contacted Credihealth, to get assistance for a Gynaecology consultation in Bangalore for his wife, who was 3 months pregnant.

How We Helped:

  • Since the appointment with the gynaecologist was scheduled for later in the month, the medical expert quickened the process by speaking with the hospital coordinator and arranging a consultation on an urgent basis.

  • Mrs Pratibha had to get a specific scan but the cost of the scan was on the higher end. The expert communicated Mrs Pratibha’s concern to the hospital coordinator.

  • The expert was able to negotiate a complimentary scan for Mrs Pratibha. The appointment for the scan was kept on priority and this information was communicated with the family.

Mrs Pratibha is doing well and has planned her delivery with the same gynaecologist and hospital. The family continues to stay in touch with their Credihealth medical expert for their medical assistance needs.

Mrs. Laxmi Kannoj

Bangalore

Mrs. Laxmi Kannoj is 38 years old and the mother of two sons. The moment she experienced that her water broke for this child in her womb, she experienced something wrong with the baby. At the time the water broke, Mrs. Kannoj suffered a high fever, full-body convulsions and also developed an infection. Mrs. Laxmi Kannoj's husband was already in contact with the executives of Credihealth for future references. At the urge of delivery, he had an online consultation with the Gynecologist in Bangalore and discovered that it was labor pain. It was difficult to handle as the mother was pregnant with the third child but was suffering from fever and may have developed the chances of infection.

How did Credihealth help Mrs. Kannoj?

  • Mrs. Kannoj developed some convulsions along with fever at the time of labor pain. On the other hand, Mr. Kannoj was unable to arrange some conveyance for the wife.

  • Since it was going to be a vaginal delivery, the Credihealth doctors helped the father of two and remained online until the baby was delivered.

  • Mr. Kannoj was already seeking help from the best Gynecologist in Bangalore. So, he knew that it was time to seek a doctor’s help and have arrangements for the baby's delivery.

  • The gynecologist seeking live information with the help of the advanced software helped and guided the husband with all the steps.

  • The doctor informed the husband about the convulsions and the moment they subsided.

  • It created the appearance of the right time to deliver the baby that all went through the use of household appliances and with the help of the doctor or his team.

After the delivery was successful, Mrs. Kannoj was still having a fever and was sweating heavily. Mr. Kannoj helped his wife arrange a conveyance from a nearby area and seek immediate hospitalization for both the baby and mother. The baby and mother both were delivered with the guidance of a doctor during the online consultation. Today, both the baby and mother are safe and living a secure lifestyle.

Mrs. Arpana

Bangalore

Mrs. Arpana, who was living in her 40s, came to Bangalore to her parent’s house from a nearby district. Traveling from her marital home to her parent's house was not a big issue for her. It was hardly 35 minutes or one hour away between the two districts. Somehow, Mrs. Aparna came in contact with Credihealth through one of her friend’s recommendations and her husband’s insisting power. She was recommended to the best Gynecologist in Bangalore somewhere in a nearby area.

How did Credihealth help the patient?

  • Since the patient was healthy and residing in a nearby district, it wasn't a big issue for the patient to deliver a child in Bangalore. The problem was that she was receiving care for the baby in her 40s.

  • The executives of Credihealth connected with BD, talking about the severity of the case.

  • The case was referred to the SPOC of the company, who helped the patient receive the best medical care in the nearby hospital.

The problem arrived during the 6th month of her pregnancy when she started feeling severe pain like it was labor pain. Seeing the previous medical history, it went all clear, Mrs. Aparna was having a baby in her 40s, but it all seemed fine till the 5th month. But as soon as she reached her 6th month, she started having issues. Mrs. Aparna was already consulting one of the recommendations from the side of Credihealth, sometimes having online consultations with the best Gynecologist in Bangalore.

It was revealed that the baby is suffering from a rare heart disease called congenital heart disease. It was said that till the baby is in her womb, the baby will be fine, but when that baby will come out through delivery, the baby will suffer because of the rare disease and can die. It was a rare case because of which Mrs. Aparna had to go through premature delivery to secure the life of the baby. There were 70-30% chances of the survival of the baby and the mother. However, the baby received therapy in the hospital and was incubated with the machines. On the other hand, Mrs. Aparna received a small surgery after delivery and got her baby daughter healthy and fine after the completion of two months' incubation in the hospital.
