We met doctor jyoti for our son’s bone marrow transplant. She was extremely polite and made us understand the entire procedure. We were very nervous about our baby but she was supportive and helped us out at a very critical time.

My mother has been coming to Medanta hospital for her cancer treatment for over a year now. The staff is very professional and they are very pleasant to talk to. The only problem is that my mother has had to wait a lot for her appointment. She is old and not well, so it gets difficult. But other than that the department is very good. The hospital is also clean.

What is Oncology?

Oncology is that speciality of medical science which deals with all things Cancer. A medical specialist who has been trained in managing cancer and provides medical expertise to treat cancer is known as an Oncologist.

There are three major areas of expertise under Oncology

  1. Surgical Oncology - A surgical oncologist will remove the cancerous tumour and near-by areas by resecting it surgically. Before getting the surgery done, the doctor may opt for a biopsy (cutting out a small mass from the growth) to understand more about cancer, and to identify the best onco treatment.

  2. Medical Oncology - A medical oncologist uses medical interventions like chemotherapy, targetted therapy, immunotherapy, among other options, to treat growing cancer.

  3. Radiation Oncology - A radiation oncologist uses high-intensity radiations to destroy the cancer cells.

All these treatment options can be used individually or in combination, depending on multiple factors like the patient's age, health condition, the type of tumour, the stage and extent etc.

Oncology specialists are also available within certain sub-specialities like

  • Gynecologic oncologist - A gynecologic oncologist treats cancers specific to gynecologic cancers like cancer of the cervix, uterus, ovaries etc.

  • Paediatric oncologist - A paediatric oncologist treats cancers that are common among small children and teenagers. Some of these cancers are leukaemia, osteosarcoma, brain tumours etc.

  • Haemato-oncologist - These doctors look into cancers which are specific to blood, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma.

  • Gastrointestinal oncologist - These doctors treat cancers of the gastrointestinal tract like cancer of the colon, rectum, anal canal, stomach etc.

  • Genitourinary oncologist - These doctors cater to cancers of the genital area and urinary tract.

Role of an Oncologist

  • The oncologist manages the patient's ailment, and in this case, cancer, through the course of the disease.

  • The oncologist diagnoses the diseases through diagnostic tests and the patient's history. The oncologist explains the disease to the patient and/or the family members and also answers the doubts they might have.

  • The oncologist discusses all possible treatment options with the patient and their family before starting the treatment.

  • The oncologist provides medications and helps the patient manage the symptoms and side-effects during the course of the treatment.

Other members who help treat cancer

A patient may have to consult multiple oncologists and may also have to meet different doctors to get well completely. A team of over 2-3 doctors, including medical, surgical and radiation oncologist and other members, which include a pathologist, a diagnostic radiologist or an oncology nurse, come together to treat the patient at every stage.

In case the cancer is difficult to treat, a tumour board is consulted. This board includes medical specialists from different disciplines. The tumour board understands the medical case and ultimately recommends the best action plan for the treatment of the patient.
