Facelift Surgery is a cosmetic surgical treatment to enhance the appearance of face and neck. It is also called Rhytidectomy.
Excess skin is removed, facial soft tissues are stiffened and skin is covered back over the newly repositioned facial lines in the procedure. Usually, other cosmetic procedures are also performed along with the rhytidectomy.
Rhytidectomy is considered in the following conditions:
Cheeks and facial skin are sagging due to aging
Neck has lost its definition and excess fat is gathered
Vertical skin bands of neck have surfaced
Creases around your lower lip and chin as well as beneath lower eyelids are becoming apparent
Excess fat hanging from lower jaw line (jowls)
The surgeon will examine the facial bone structure, skin and neck to evaluate the treatment options. People who have thin, long face structures have a higher possibility to achieve better results from a facelift than those who have low cheekbones, round face structure and short jawbones.
The surgeon will recommend to
Avoid taking blood thinning medications, at least 10 days before the surgery.
Avoid eating 6 to 8 hours prior to the procedure.
Washing hair and face on the day of the surgery.
The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia, and may take upto 2 hours. Depending on the amount of changes, the surgeon may use either of the following techniques
Traditional Facelift – In this, the surgeon makes cut in the hairline beginning from the temple, following around the front ears and ending at the bottom scalp behind the ears.
Limited Incision Facelift – The surgeon makes minor incisions in the hairline beginning from the temple to the front of the ears. Cuts may also be made either beneath the upper lip or the lower eyelids.
Necklift – The surgeon makes incisions beginning from front of the earlobes to behind the ears in the lower scalp including area under the chin.
After making the incisions, your surgeon will sculpt or redistribute the excess fat from the face, neck and jowls. The surgeon may also use liposuction method to remove excess skin. Then the skin will then be draped over the newly formed facial lines. Tapes or stitches will be used to close the cuts.
The face will be tightly bandaged for a 3 to 5 days after the surgery. Behind the earlobes, a tube may be placed to drain the blood.
The surgeon will recommend to take rest with the head kept high and avoid any pressure on the face.
In the follow-up consultation, the surgeon will remove the bandage and check for ingrown hairs and infection. There will be redness and swelling after the bandage is removed. Exposure to sun should be strictly avoided for atleast 2 weeks.
