Description

Macular Hole is a tiny tear in the macula that is located in the center of the eye’s light-sensitive tissue. This results in blurred and distorted vision.

Vitrectomy is the most common technique used to treat macular holes. This procedure includes the removal of vitreous from the eyes and replacing it with a saline-like solution. Vitreous is the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the eye.

Indication

In early stages of development of macular holes, there is a slight distortion or blurriness in the vision. In some cases, straight lines or objects can begin to look bent. Reading and performing other routine tasks with the affected eye become difficult.

Macular holes may be developed due to

  • Shrinking of vitreous
  • High amount of myopia
  • Macular Pucker
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Injury to the eye
Pre-Procedure

The doctor will recommend to stop consuming blood thinners, at least 5 days before the surgery.

During-Procedure

The surgery is performed by an experienced opthalmologist, uncer local or general anesthesia. It may last from an hour to several hours, depending on the case.

Vitrectomy is a minimal invasive surgery that involves minute incisions in the white part of the eye (called sclera). The doctor then removes any debris or scar tissue that may be causing obstruction in vision.

The doctor may inject a air bubble that will help keep the retina is place or the doctor may inject a special liquid substance – which may be later removed through another surgery.

Post-Procedure

Generally, the patient is discharged in a day.

The doctor may recommend:

  • Wearing an eye patch for a short duration
  • Using eye drops
  • If a gas bubble was placed in the eye, then the patient is advised to lie down in a special position
  • Until gas bubble dissolves, avoid taking planes for transport
Risk and Complication

Vitrectomy may cause the following complications:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor vision
  • Retinal detachment
  • Early cataract formation
  • Increase in eye pressure
