Description

Ossiculoplasty is performed to repair or reconstruct 3 bones in the middle ear between eardrum and inner ear. These bones together are called the Ossicular Chain.

The surgery either reconstructs the middle ear bones or uses prosthetics to replace bones, thereby improving the movement of the bones and treating hearing impairement.

Indication

This type of surgical procedure is recommended to treat hearing impairement caused due to damaged middle ear bones. The damage can be as a result of:

  • Trauma or injury
  • Severe infection
  • Tumor in the ear
Pre-Procedure

The doctor will instruct to fast for 8 to 10 hours, prior to the surgery.

During-Procedure

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia by an experienced ENT surgeon.

During the procedure,

  • The surgeon uses an operating microscope to view the eardrum through the ear canal. If the canal is too small, then an incision may be made behind the ear.
  • The surgeon makes a tiny incision behind the ear and carefully elevates the eardrum.
  • Damaged ear bones are either reshaped so they function better, or removed and replaced with prosthetic ossicles.
  • In some cases, graft from cartilage of ear canal may possibly be used to repair the damaged bones in the middle ear.
  • The eardrum is, then, placed back in its normal position and the incision is sutured.
Post-Procedure

After the procedure, the patient may return home on the same day.

Discharge from the ear is common for 7 to 10 days after the surgery, however if it continues for long time and causes pain, swelling or foul smelling odour, consult the doctor immediately.

The doctor will advise to

  • Avoid strenuous activities for first few weeks.
  • Strictly avoid blowing the nose
  • Keep ear away from the water
Risk and Complication

Ossiculoplasty is relatively a safe procedure. However, commonly known risks include:

  • Bleeding or infection in the ear
  • Worsening of hearing, or, in rare cases, complete loss of hearing
  • Hole in the eardrum
  • In rare cases, damage to facial nerve
  • Altered taste
