The surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon under general anesthesia. Complete tummy tuck surgery can take up to 5 hours whereas partial tummy tuck surgery can take 1-2 hours.
Complete Tummy Tuck Surgery: A large incision is made on the lower abdomen, above the pubic area, extending from one hipbone to the other. Another incision is made to free the navel or the belly button. Excess skin & fat are removed and the abdominal muscles are stitched close together to tighten them. The umbilicus or the belly button is repositioned. Incisions are sutured / stapled and dressing is placed. Drain may have to be placed temporarily to remove excess fluids.
Partial Tummy Tuck Surgery: A smaller incision is required. Abdominal muscles are not tightened, only the excess skin and fat on the lower abdomen are removed. The belly button is not repositioned.
In some cases, tummy tuck is performed with other surgeries like liposuction contouring, breast reduction, breast lift, or occasionally hysterectomy.
