A liver transplant is done to replace the damaged liver in the patient’s body with a whole or partial liver, that is healthy. It is a surgical procedure and requires hospital admission, as well as pre and post-operative care. Liver transplant is the only cure for advanced stages of liver diseases.
The liver can be taken from a close relative or a brain dead donor, after matching blood groups and other tests. A patient who has been diagnosed with liver disease and has less than a year of life expectancy can be considered for a transplant.
Though, if the patient has other diseases like cancer, active infection, drug abuse, other severe medical illnesses, which confirm an even shorter life expectancy, then the liver transplant is not going to give results.
Detecting liver diseases and seeking treatment at an early stage is thus always beneficial.
The liver is a vital organ located in the upper-right portion of the abdominal cavity. It is a reddish-brown organ and receives blood for two sources - the hepatic artery and the hepatic portal vein. The liver is responsible for the metabolism of drugs and toxins, removing toxins products of normal body metabolism and synthesizing many important enzymes and proteins. The liver also plays a major role in producing bile, a liquid that assists in dissolving fats and removing toxins through the intestine.
It also helps fight infections, thus improving immunity, converting excess glucose to starch for energy and cleans the blood.
The liver can function adequately, even when 30% of it is healthy and the rest 70% is removed. Also, close to 50% of the liver can be removed from a donor, without the donor facing any complications.
The liver is the only organ in our body that can regenerate after portions of it are removed. This is also the reason why liver transplants have over 80% success rate for patients and are safe for donors as well.
Acute Hepatitis - It is an infection of the liver that leads to inflammation and liver damage. A previously healthy liver gets infected by a virus, like viral hepatitis, or overdose of a drug or due to any chemical exposure by ingestion. The common symptoms that follow acute hepatitis are Jaundice, vomiting, nausea, fever, loss of appetite, sore muscles and joint pains. Acute hepatitis is usually diagnosed with the help of lab tests for viral detection as well as Liver Function Tests.
Chronic Hepatitis - When a patient does not fully recover from Acute Hepatitis, they may develop Chronic Hepatitis. The inflammation and damage to the liver increase with time. If the symptoms are visible beyond 6 months, then it turns into chronic hepatitis. Chronic Hepatitis is of three types - Alcohol-induced Chronic Hepatitis, Chronic active hepatitis and Chronic persistent Hepatitis. The symptoms are more or less similar to Acute Hepatitis. Chronic Hepatitis is diagnosed with the help of lab tests, Liver function tests and liver biopsy.
Liver Cirrhosis - There is irreversible scarring of the liver due to damage caused by liver diseases like Hepatitis. Over 70-90% liver is replaced by dead tissue. This is a severe condition that requires immediate intervention.
The most common tests done to detect liver diseases are
Liver Function Tests - Serum bilirubin, Serum Albumin, Serum alkaline phosphatase, Serum Aminotransferases, Prothrombin time, GGT, AFP, AMA
Virus Tests - HAV IgM, HEV IgM, HCV-Ab, HCV RNA, HBsAg, HBeAg, HBV DNA, Anti-HBs

I was experiencing fever, nausea and stomach ache. I went to the doctor only to be diagnosed with hepatitis C and the doctor said that a liver transplant was required. At that time I had no idea what the disease was or what its treatment was all about. After a long battle to get help, I eventually landed on credihealth.com who further guided and assisted me with the course of action.

My husband's life was at stake. He had a liver failure and was evaluated and asked to wait for a cadaveric donor - which had the possibility to never materialize. On 5 November 2017, Credihealth - whom I had earlier contacted to book my repeated appointments contacted me as they had a suitable donor liver. Credihealth organized all the appointments, helped me in the post-hospitalization formalities as well.
I was suffering from terminal liver failure. I was condemned to die by fate and doctors alike. He and his family were in turmoil and losing faith. However, credihealth came as a savior as I was looking online for liver transplants, I fond them. I called them, got in touch with their doctors who guided me through the entire step of the transplant. Further, booked appointments and second opinions to be sure of the surgery.

How Credihealth Made a Difference
Sixty-five years old Sunil Anand, from Bhopal, was diagnosed with Liver Cirrhosis and was advised a liver transplant surgery. Mr. Anand consulted at the hospital of his choice but was not satisfied due to a lack of availability of beds under his insurance panel.
Making A Difference
Credihealth’s medical expert recommended a super specialty hospital in Delhi NCR and provided Mr. Anand and his family assurance, as well as, financial counseling and guidance. The medical expert also continuously coordinated with the hospital SPOC and informed them about Mr. Anand's medical status as well as insurance specifications.
The medical expert arranged for the doctor's appointment on priority at short notice. The doctor's team, as well as the SPOC, was informed by the expert.
The medical expert arranged for a bed under the insurance panel on the same day and Mr. Anand was admitted.
Their family requested an urgent need for 20 units of blood, of which 12 they could arrange. The medical expert coordinated with Credihealth's team, and internally arranged for a few units of blood, enough for Mr Anand's final treatment to begin.
The medical expert also met Mr. Anand and his family at the hospital and guided them through the formalities.
The family thanked the medical expert for all the guidance, assistance, help and support provided at every point of the medical journey. Credihealth's medical expert was able to change a previously negative hospital experience, into a very positive one.Show all Stories

Donating a liver is very safe. The liver is the only organ that can regenerate and grow on its own. During the surgery, close to 40-60% of the live organ is removed. The donor's liver almost immediately starts to regenerate and grows maximum in the first two weeks after surgery. Apart from some discomfort and pain, the donor recovers and feels better within weeks.
