Your surgeon will check your medical history and ask for details of supplements and medications you are taking. You will be asked to stop consuming alcohol or tobacco (in any form) atleast a month before the procedure.
Photos might be taken before the surgery to compare the before and after conditions.
Depending on that and on the amount of fat being removed, you will be given general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. The length of the procedure also depends on the amount of fat to be removed.
During the surgery you can expect:
Your doctor will mark the body area from which the fat has to be removed.
In Tumescent Liposuction technique, a solution will be inserted in the marked area. The solution generally is a mixture of salt water, epinephrine and lidocaine. This solution will swell and stiffen the area. After making the cut(s), a suction tube is inserted. A suction pump or a syringe is used to remove the excess fat, which is removed with the help of vacuum.
In Ultrasound Lipsuction, your doctor will insert a thin metal via cut in the marked area. Ultrasound waves will be passed through it to break and liquify the fat cells. In some cases tumescent and ultrasound techniques are used in conjunction.
Powered Liposuction is used for tough fat that has to be removed from arms, knees and ankles. In this technique a suction tube is inserted in the marked area. This tube moves back and forth rapidly thereby creating a vibration and removing the fat.
You can go back home a few hours after the surgery. Some of the things you can expect after the surgery are:
You will be made to wear a compression garment
You might feel bruising, swelling or pain.
Antibiotics might be given to avoid infection
