Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition which affects women in the reproductive age. It is a hormonal disorder in which ovaries develop a number of small collections of fluid, also known as follicles, and fail to release eggs efficiently.

It can also cause prolonged or infrequent menstrual cycles, acne and unwanted facial hair and increase in the secretion level of androgen, a male hormone.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

Symptoms of PCOS might vary slightly from one woman to another. The severity of these symptoms is also likely to be more in people who are obsese.

The signs and symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome include:

  • Irregular or prolonged periods

  • Excess secretion of androgen (a male hormone)

  • Enlarged ovaries (due to formation of cysts)

  • Darkened skin, particularly in the neck and armpit region

  • Weight gain

  • Pain in pelvic region

  • Extreme mood swings

What causes PCOS?

The exact cause of PCOS is yet unknown, but there are a number of factors that can play a role in this process, including:

  • Higher Insulin production: Insulin is a hormone that enables the cells in your body to use up sugar. It is produced in pancreas. If the cells become resistant to insulin, its level in the body will naturally begin to rise. This causes increase in androgen production, which affects the process of ovulation negatively.

  • Heredity: Researches suggest that if your mother or your sister has PCOS, you are also likely to have or develop it.

  • Low grade inflammation: It stimulates the cystic ovaries to produce androgens, leading to heart and blood vessel problems

What are some of the complications related to PCOS?

PCOS causes extraordinary secretion of androgen, which is a hormone involved in the development of male sex organs and other characteristics, such as facial and body hair. There are various complications caused by PCOS and the resultant increase in androgen, including:

  • Infertility

  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood sugar

  • Abnormal body and facial hair growth

  • Considerable weight gain

  • Acne

  • Darkened skin around neck and armpits

  • Miscarriage or premature birth

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Thinning hair

  • Endometrial cancer (cancer in the lining of uterus)

  • Sleep cancer

How is PCOS diagnosed?

A gynecologist will conduct a pelvic exam, in order to check up on the parts of your reproductive system. For this exam, the doctor will insert gloved fingers into the vagina and check for any abnormal growth.

A blood test is also administered to evaluate the levels of male hormones, insulin, cholesterol levels etc in your blood. Moreover, an ultrasound can also be prescribed by the gynecologist if they detect any abnormality in the reproductive system.

Patient Stories

Pratibha

Bangalore

Husband of 20 years old Pratibha (name changed) contacted Credihealth, to get assistance for a Gynaecology consultation in Bangalore for his wife, who was 3 months pregnant.

How We Helped:

  • Since the appointment with the gynaecologist was scheduled for later in the month, the medical expert quickened the process by speaking with the hospital coordinator and arranging a consultation on an urgent basis.

  • Mrs Pratibha had to get a specific scan but the cost of the scan was on the higher end. The expert communicated Mrs Pratibha’s concern to the hospital coordinator.

  • The expert was able to negotiate a complimentary scan for Mrs Pratibha. The appointment for the scan was kept on priority and this information was communicated with the family.

Mrs Pratibha is doing well and has planned her delivery with the same gynaecologist and hospital. The family continues to stay in touch with their Credihealth medical expert for their medical assistance needs.
