What is colon cancer treatment?

Colon cancer is a type of cancer that develops and begins in the large intestine (Colon) known as Colon Cancer. The colon is the final part of the digestive tract in our body. The type of cancer primarily affects older adults; however, it may happen at any age. The type of cancer begins as polyps, a noncancerous form that develops inside the colon. These polyps need to be detected earlier; otherwise, some of these polyps may become colon cancers over time. Colon cancer is also called colorectal cancer and is a word that incorporates colon cancer and rectal cancer, which begins in the rectum.

Various treatment options, including surgery, radiation therapy, and drug treatments, such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, are performed to treat colon cancer in India. Colon cancer treatment methods may vary on location, size, and origin of the cancer spread and patient's medical condition. However, cancer surgeons treat early-stage colorectal cancer with surgical treatment alone.

Which diagnosis test can be recommended for Colon cancer?

The first phase in developing a colon cancer treatment plan is a comprehensive and accurate cancer diagnosis. Colon cancer specialist multidisciplinary team uses various tests and instruments to diagnose and evaluate colorectal cancer and prepare individualized treatments. The health team may perform multiple imaging and laboratory tests to track or identify the tumors' size to develop the best possible treatment plan. These tests include -

Endoscopic procedures – the diagnosis procedure helps a doctor in body examination from inside. A tool called an endoscope or colonoscope is inserted inside the body for polyps or any abnormalities look-up. Even small polyps are removed during colonoscopy itself.

Lab tests – Multiple stool lab tests are conducted to look for blood, DNA abnormalities, or other cancer indicators.

Biopsies - Biopsies play a critical part in diagnosing colorectal cancer. A small part of polyps or tissue is taken from the colon/rectum for examination during the colonoscopy performed by your gastroenterologist during the biopsy. These samples are retrieved during other endoscopic procedures like sigmoidoscopy or endoscopic ultrasound. These samples are later sent to a laboratory for further analysis to detect the cancer traces.

CT scan: Cancer is a disease that can spread to other body parts. Chest, abdomen, and pelvis are scanned to check the same. This scan ensures if cancer is not spread in the lungs, liver, or any other organ. So, CT scans are performed before and during colorectal cancer treatment to check the treatment efficiency and spread to other parts.

MRI: MRI uses magnetic and radio waves to produce detailed rectal images to help doctors detect cancer stages. These imaging tests produce more detailed images than CT scans.

PET/CT scan – This test is done to check if colorectal cancer spread to lymph nodes or other body parts like the liver or lungs. This test also helps in detecting the cancer stage.

Ultrasound: High energy sound waves are used to produce images of internal organs in this procedure. It helps the doctor check tumors in abdominal organs like the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas when the fluid is found in the abdomen.

How effective is colon cancer surgery treatment for colon cancer?

Diagnosing colon cancer at an earlier stage is Important as it helps a patient choose the best possible treatment plan with a variety of options. A doctor may create an effective treatment option for the best cancer treatment depending on a patient's overall health. Colon cancer surgery treatment is widespread and considered adequate. Following steps are involved in surgery method of colon cancer treatment -

Surgery – it may be possible for a cancer surgeon to remove cancerous polyps by surgery if the polyp hasn't stuck to the wall of the bowels. If colon cancer in a patient has spread through bowel walls, the surgeon will need to remove a portion of the colon or rectum along with any neighboring lymph nodes. If necessary, the surgeon will reattach the remaining healthy part of the colon to the rectum.

If this isn't feasible, the surgeon may perform a colostomy. This surgery includes making an opening in the abdominal wall for the removal of waste. A colostomy can be temporary or permanent.
