Typhoid fever is a serious disease with a case fatality rate (untreated) of about 20%. With effective treatment, the fatality rate can be as low as 1–2%.

Antibiotic therapy is the only effective treatment for typhoid fever. Commonly used antibiotics are Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) This is not usually given to pregnant women or children. or Ceftriaxone (Rocephin).

These drugs can cause side effects, and long-term use can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, especially in the developing world. Bacterial resistance has already developed to Chloramphenicol resulting in it not being commonly used. This agent also has shown resistance to ampicillin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
