Edema is a swelling from fluid accumulation in body tissues. When parts of the body are affected with edemait is called edematous. Edema commonly affects the feet, ankles, legs, and hands which is peripheral edema. The swelling is the cause of the accumulation of excess fluid beneath the skin within the tissues.
