Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography?

A:

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure that uses both endoscopy and fluoroscopy. It is used to treat problems in the gastrointestinal tract which includes organs like pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, intestine, etc. Through this procedure, your doctor can view inside these organs and check if there are any abnormalities or tumours.

Q: Why is Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography done?

A:

Your liver, pancreas, bile duct, gallbladder and other organs play an important role in digestion. The pancreas helps in releasing enzymes that aid in digestion and bile is used to digest fats. Problems with any of these organs can lead to non-absorption of vital nutrients. It can even cause jaundice, which is the yellowing of skin if your liver isn’t functioning properly.

Other than this, blockages and gallstones can also be present in your gastrointestinal tract. To diagnose and relieve you from these problems, your doctor will do ERCP. He may also provide you with treatment during ERCP to open the blockages or remove the stones.

Answered by: Ayush Joshi on 30/09/2019

Q: How is Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography performed?

A:

During ERCP, the doctor will give you a mild sedative to help you relax first. He will then insert an endoscope (a tube with a camera at the end) through your oesophagus into your intestine. The endoscope helps locate the papilla (an opening between the bile ducts and intestine). The doctor will then pass a catheter through the papilla which helps identify the narrowing, blockages or scars present in the bile duct or pancreas using an X-Ray.

Depending on the problem, the doctor may introduce a stent, make a small incision to drain the liquid from the pancreas or bile ducts or dissolve the gallstones if they are creating any blockage.
