Most of the patients diagnosed with breast cancer have to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the cancerous cells from the body. Breast conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer cells along with some normal tissues around it, but not the complete breast itself. In some cancer patients where the cancer has spread to the chest wall, a part of the chest wall is also removed. Such type of breast cancer surgery is called Lumpectomy, Partial Mastectomy or Breast Sparing Cancer Surgery.
The other type of surgery is Total Mastectomy, in which the entire breast is removed. In case of advanced stages of breast cancer, Modified Radical Mastectomy is performed. During this procedure, whole breast is removed along with lymph node under the arm, lining of chest wall and other affected muscles.
For breast cancer treatment, chemotherapy may be given to the patient before or after the surgery. Before the surgery, chemo will reduce the size of the tumor and control the spread of cancer. Such type of chemotherapy is commonly known as Neoadjuvant Therapy. In some cases, the patients are given chemotherapy, radiation therapy or hormone therapy to kill any cancerous cell left and lower the risk of tumor recurrence.
