More Information on Esophageal Manometry

Indication

The doctor will recommend this procedure, for diagnosing oesophageal disorders. Symptoms that reflect the disorder are:

  • Dysphagia: When there is difficulty in swallowing attributed to poor coordination of esophageal muscles
  • Achalasia: When muscles of esophagus are weak and do not allow food movement to the stomach causing backward movement of food
  • When there are problems like heartburn, acid reflux or chest pain

Esophageal Manometry is also recommended before the surgery to treat Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Pre-Procedure

The doctor will recommend you to

  • Fast for 6 to 8 hours prior to the procedure
  • Stop certain medications that can cause complications

During-Procedure

The procedure is generally done by an experienced gastroenterologist. There is no need of anaesthesia or sedation. During the procedure,

  • First of all, the doctor will give a solution to gargle or a gel/spray is applied to the throat. The purpose is to numb the throat and nose.
  • A thin and flexible tube containing sensors is passed through the nose, into the oesophagus and down to the stomach.
  • Small sips of water will be given. Pattern of contractions of esophageal muscles, their strength and the pressure exerted by these muscles will be recorded.
  • This entire process is continued for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then the tube is slowly removed.

Post-Procedure

Generally, the patients are able to resume their normal activities in a few hours after the procedure.

The patient may have sore throat and congested nose for 1 to 2 days post the procedure.

Risk and Complication

This a very safe procedure. But as with other medical procedures, it also has certain risks.

  • Choking when the tube is passed through throat
  • Watering of eyes
  • Sore throat
  • Congested nose
  • Nose bleeding
  • Puncture in the esophagus, in extremely rare cases
  • Irregular heartbeat
