Direct Visual Internal Urethrotomy (DVIU), commonly known as Urethrotomy, is a surgical procedure to repair the narrowing of the urethra and relieving bladder pressure. Urethra is the tube through which urine passes from the bladder to the outside of the body.
DVIU is performed to treat urethra scarring that may be caused by an infection or injury. If not treated in time, urethral stricture can cause further aggravate in infection leading to inability to urinate or empty bladder. It can also cause prostate problems in men.

The patient is diagnosed with urethral stricture by his doctor through cystoscopy or prior urethrotomy

In Internal Urethrotomy, a special cold knife is used to cut the scarring tissue. This method is used in patients with bulbar urethral strictures.
The catheter is attached to drainage system (leg bag) via a tube which helps drain out urine.
Generally, the patient can go home on the same of the procedure.

Avoid any strenuous physical activity like lifting heavy objects or jumping.
Avoid sexual activity.
The catheter is removed in about a week from the surgery. Complete recovery takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
