Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure performed to repair cranial defects or bone defects in the skull resulting from injury or left behind after previous surgeries or traumas. There are different types of cranioplasty surgery, as they are categorized based on the type of material used to reconstruct the skull defect. Lifting the scalp and restoring the contour of the skull is included in most cranioplasty surgeries. Usually, this replacement is either the original skull piece or custom contoured graft made from material such as:

• A portion of bone from the patient’s rib or pelvis

• A portion of bone from the patient’s skull (that is removed and replaced)

• The doctor will guide you about the procedure and ask you about any past or current medical condition or record. The doctor may also suggest some specific medical diagnostic tests to ensure necessary health checks before moving ahead for the cranioplasty.

• You also need to discuss with the doctor if you have any health issues, such as blood clotting conditions, taking blood thinners, or anti-inflammatory medicines.

A doctor uses general anesthesia before making the patient sedative and comfortable before making an incision. The doctor strips and cleans that area and then makes an incision to expose the bone. The doctor removes the bone to reshape and reattach it.

Later, the surrounding bone edges are washed and treated to improve grafting. In few cases, the doctor can reshape or reattach the removed bone or use prosthetic or alternative synthetic surgical substances to complete the surgery. The doctor attaches the bone or bone replacement to the skull with screws and plates and closes the skin around the skull using suitable sutures.
