The vocal cords are two small narrow muscular folds that are present in the voice box or larynx of your throat just above the windpipe. They are chiefly responsible for producing sound by vibrating, as the air from the lungs passes through them. This vibration leads to the generation of sound or voice.
The vocal cords may be subjected to strain when they are used continuously. They may also develop an infection or may have a growth in the muscles due to a variety of reasons. Due to this, the person may have difficulty in speaking or may lose their voice completely. To treat such conditions, vocal cord surgery is required.
