About Urostomy

Urostomy is a procedure to create urinary diversion so that the urine can flow from abdomen to a pouch attached outside the body via a stoma. Instead of flowing into the urinary bladder, the urine will go into the stoma.

Urostomy can be performed either through Ileal Conduit or Ureterostomy. A part of small intestine is used to create a conduit in ileal conduit technique while in ureterostomy, the ureters are directly connected to the wall of the abdomen to create a stoma.

More Information on Urostomy

Indication

The procedure is recommended by the doctor when

  • Urinary tract is damaged or not working properly leading to inability to urinate
  • Urinary bladder has damaged blood vessels
  • Urinary bladder is removed due to cancer

Pre-Procedure

The doctor will instruct to

  • Stop blood thinning medications, at least 10 days before the surgery
  • Avoid food or water 8 to 10 hours prior to the surgery

During-Procedure

The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia, by an experienced urologist. The surgery can take upto 2 hours.

During the procedure,

  • After the anesthesia is administered, the surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen.
  • A catheter is attached and the bladder is emptied.
  • Ureters are directly connected to the abdominal wall and a stoma is created. The stoma will stick out from the skin.
  • A special pouch is placed over the stoma that collects the urine.

Post-Procedure

Generally, the patient is discharged from the hospital in a day or two.

After coming back home, the patient has to take utmost care of the stoma, pouch and skin around it. It has to be ensured that stoma and pouch are appropriately connected, so as to prevent urine leakage.

The doctor will recommend to

  • Clean the skin with lukewarn wet towel and drying it, before re-attaching the pouch.
  • Use medicated products to relive the irriation around the stoma
  • Limit physical activities for 3 to 4 weeks
  • Not to wear tight clothes

Risk and Complication

Urostomy is a relatively safe procedure. However, the stoma has to be taken utmost care of. Stoma can easily catch infection.

Signs of infection include:

  • Dark urine or urine containing excess mucus
  • Strong odour from urine
  • Back pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting or reduced appetite
