The following guidelines are followed before performing a hemorrhoidectomy-

• The doctor may stop any kind of medication prescribed to the patient hours before the surgery and in some cases days before the surgery.

• The patient is asked to stop smoking (if he does) at least two weeks before the surgery because smoking can obstruct the healing process.

• A chest X-Ray and Electrocardiogram (ECG) will be done to rule out the presence of any heart or lung disease.

• The patient must not eat at least 6 to 12 hours before the surgery.

• Saline enemas are provided in the morning before the surgery to wash and clean the rectum and the large intestine’s lower part for any fecal matter.
