Dr. KR Balakrishnan

Dr. K R Balakrishnan is the Director of the Department of Cardiac Sciences and Chief of Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgery. He has over 37 years of rich experience in his field. Dr. Balakrishnan has performed the first permanent artificial heart transplant in India with HeartMate II LVAD. He completed his MBBS from JIPMER, Pondicherry in the year 1976 and MS in general surgery from AIIMS, New Delhi in 1980. Thereafter, he continued M.Ch in Cardio-Thoracic Surgery from KEM Hospital, the University of Bombay in the year 1982. He has worked with many reputed institutes like Green Lane Hospital, New Zealand and Oregon Health Science University and St Vincent Hospital, Oregon, USA. Dr. K R Balakrishnan has done the highest number of heart transplants in India. On the other hand, he has also performed critical cardiac surgeries like Valvular Heart procedures, including aortic root replacement, repair & replacement, and Ross procedure. He has successfully performed over 16,000 heart operations, individually. He has been dignified with Hiralal Gold Medal in Surgery by AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr. K R Balakrishnan has treated several patients suffering from heart diseases in India.
