What kind of cancers are treated by bone marrow transplant?

Bone marrow transplants are accepted worldwide as the best treatment option for most blood cancers. They are recommended to treat lymphomas and leukaemias, like AML, ALL, CLL, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, NHL, various bone marrow diseases like aplastic anaemia, pure red cell aplasia, immune system disorders including SCID and sickle cell disease. Bone marrow transplant in Bangalore is also done fo myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma and other disorders related to plasma cell.

How many types of bone marrow transplants are available in Bangalore?

There are two major types of bone marrow transplants. The first being autologous transplant, where stem cells are taken from the patient itself before the cancer treatment begins. The stem cells are brought back in the body post-cancer treatment like chemotherapy, to restore and strengthen the immune system. The second type is known as an allogeneic transplant, where a donor’s stem cells are injected into the patient post-cancer treatment. An allogeneic transplant can happen only when a suitable donor is available for the transplant. If neither autologous nor allogeneic transplant is possible, patients can look into other options like umbilical cord blood transplant and parent-child transplant.

What are the different steps in AUTO and ALLO transplant?

In an autologous transplant, the steps are broadly divided into four stages. First is the collection of stem cells from the cancer patient, giving pre-transplant treatment like radiation therapy or chemotherapy, injecting the stem cells back in the patient, and finally, recovery.

For an allogeneic transplant, the first step is to identify the correct donor for the patient, which includes HLA testing, then the stem cells are collected from the appropriate donor, the patient undergoes pre-transplant treatment, the stem cells from the donor are introduced in the receiver or the patient’s body, and finally, recovery happens. The recovery may be slow and may involve the consumption of medications like antibiotics in the initial stage.

Are there any side-effects of bone marrow transplant for the patient?

Some side effects have been identified which subside with time. These include

  • Infection due to poor immunity

  • Tiredness and weakness

  • Fatigue

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting and soreness in the mouth

  • Anaemia

  • Diarrhoea
