What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection that affects the female reproductive system. The female reproductive system consists of the uterus, cervix, fallopian tube and ovaries. PID is commonly caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The bacteria initially enters the body through the vagina and offsets an infection. Later, if it is left untreated, the bacteria can interact with other parts of the body and spread the infection.

PID can cause severe pelvic pain, painful intercourse, heavy vaginal bleeding and sometimes fever along with chills. It is usually difficult to be diagnosed in the early stages, because of vague symptoms.

What are the common symptoms of PID?

The symptoms of PID can be very insignificant in the initial stages, and even non-existent for some women. Some of the symptoms that are experienced by women include the following:

  • Pain in the upper and lower abdomen

  • Fever and chills

  • Pelvic pain

  • Frequent urge to urinate

  • Painful intercourse

  • Irregularities in the menstrual cycle

  • Unusual vaginal discharge

  • Pain and discomfort while urinating

  • Tiredness

If you think you have symptoms or you might have contracted STI, seek medical help as early detection and treatment of STI can help prevent PID.

What are some of the probable complications of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can give rise to serious complications if it is left untreated. It can result in infected fluid accumulation in sacs in the reproductive tract and cause other problems like scar tissue formation etc. This can further result in multiple problems like:

  • Infertility: Untimely treatment of PID can seriously damage reproductive organs and increase the risk of infertility

  • Tubal pregnancy: When there is scar tissue in the fallopian tube, the fertilised egg fails to travel to the uterus and is instead implanted in the fallopian tube. This abnormal implantation and pregnancy can lead to life-threatening conditions.

  • It can cause other problems like severe and prolonged pelvic pain, pain during intercourse and ovulation etc. It can also lead to an accumulation of pus in the reproductive tracts and if it is left untreated, it can turn into serious life-threatening infections.

What type of doctors treat PID?

Gynecologists are the doctors who treat PID. Gynecologists are trained in maintaining good health of the female reproductive system. They acquire efficiency in diagnosing and treating gynecological problems like PCOD, gynecological cancers, infertility etc.
