In vitro fertilization involves fertilization and embryo development in a laboratory. The embryo is then transferred into the uterus so that the woman seeking IVF is pregnant. This procedure can be done using the couple’s eggs and sperms or the eggs and sperms of donors. IVF is a very effective and prevalent method of conceiving if a couple has certain infertility problems.
It involves many steps and can take many tries. In some cases, it is successful in the first try and in others, it can take several tries to work. IVF may not be successful at all for some people. Everyone’s body is different and factors such as maternal age, any pre-existing condition, precision of procedure etc can also play a major role in fertility through IVF.
How is IVF done?
IVF involves a series of procedures, which are as follows:
Ovarian Stimulation and Testing
Before the IVF cycle begins, an examination is conducted to check the uterus and fallopian tubes for any damage, infection or hormonal and functional disbalance that might need attention. A semen analysis is also conducted for the male partner or the sperm donor. Women also take fertility drugs for an average of 10 days, in order to stimulate ovulation. This aids further in egg retrieval.
After 36 hours of receiving the drugs, eggs are carefully retrieved from the ovaries through the egg retrieval process. All the details regarding the egg are carefully noted by the physician.
The eggs are taken to the laboratory and the matured eggs are separated out. They are then fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory dish. The fertilization is checked the following morning.
After fertilization, the embryo is transferred to the woman’s uterus. Nowadays, a single and the healthiest embryo is placed rather than multiple embryos, because it is associated with premature delivery and lower birth weight.
After 10-12 days of transfer, a blood pregnancy test is conducted.
How much does an IVF procedure cost in India?
The cost of an IVF procedure usually ranges from 1 to 1.25 lacs rupees per cycle in India. This cost includes all diagnostic procedures, consultation, treatment and surgical charges.
