Description

Dermabrasion is basically a skin-smoothing surgery that makes use of a rapidly rotating device to smooth the outer layers of your skin.  The surgery helps reduce the appearance of fine lines of facial to improve the marks of scars caused by acne or pimples. It can be performed alone or along with other cosmetic surgeries.

After dermabrasion, skin appears younger and smoother. The surgery is performed either by plastic surgeons or dermatologists.

Likewise, there are other procedures for skin improvement, such as laser surgery, the injection of fillers, moderate to deep skin peels, etc.

Indication
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Scars caused surgery, acne or injuries
  • Tattoos
  • Skin damage, including age spots caused by sun exposure
  • Fine wrinkles, particularly surrounding the mouth
  • Potential cancerous patches on skin (actinic keratoses)
  • Redness and swelling of the nose (rhinophyma)

Pre-Procedure
  • Avoid too much exposure of sun which can give rise to permanent irregular pigmentation in the areas treated
  • Give up smoking as it can slow down the healing process after the surgery
  • Stop using blood thinning medications
  • Your surgeon may recommend you a retinoid cream for a few weeks before the surgery to accelerate the healing process after the surgery
  • In case you’ve acne problem, your surgeon may ask you to take oral antibiotic
  • Take an antiviral medicine which will help avoid viral infection after the treatment
During-Procedure
  • During the treatment, an assistant will hold the skin firmly, the surgeon will move the small motorized device using an abrasive brush or wheel across the scarred skin with an even, gentle pressure.
  • The doctor will then cautiously remove the skin’s outer layer to reveal smoother, new and younger looking skin.
  • Depending upon how much the skin area is being treated, dermabrasion surgery may take between a few minutes to approxiamately more than 1 hour.
  • If there is deep scarring or a larger skin area being treated, then the surgery may even be performed in multiple sittings.
Post-Procedure

While skin heals

  • The skin treated will become swollen and red for a few days
  • The new skin growth may be itchy
  • Sensation of burning, aching or tingling
  • A crust or scab may appear over the skin treated as it starts to heal

The surgeon may recommend pain medications, such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc. Moreover, it is recommended to stay away from the chlorinated water for at least a month.

Risk and Complication
  • Enlarged pores
  • Changes in your skin color, i.e. it becomes darker or lighter than the actual skin
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Allergic skin rashes

Dermabrasion surgery isn’t suitable for everyone. The surgeon may caution you against it if –

  • Your skin has been damaged by radiation treatments
  • There are persistent herpes simplex infections
  • You have a personal or family history of ridged areas due to an enlargement of scar tissues
More Info

On an average the dermabrasion surgery may cost up to Rs. 1.5 Lakh.
