Description

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is defined as fertilizing the woman eggs with a male sperm outside the woman body in a lab environment. The fertilized eggs are then transferred into the uterus of the woman for implantation and thus initiating pregnancy.

Originally, IVF was used for women with damaged fallopian tube but now it is being used for almost all types fertility or genetic problems. IVF has now become a treatment of choice for couples who are facing medical issues that disable them to conceive naturally.

Pre-Procedure

Several tests and screenings are conducted before IVF. Common tests include

  • Semen Analysis to check the fertility, in case you are planning to use your partner's sperm
  • Infection screening
  • Ovarian Reserve Test to check the quality and quantity of eggs
  • Uterine Cavity Analysis

You will be put on birth control pills which may reduce your risk of ovarian hyper-stimulation. Doctor will also use either basal body temperature charting or ovulation predictor kit to detect when you ovulate. Once, the doctor knows this you will be put on a hormonal medication so your ovulation can be controlled.

If you’ve irregular cycles, you’ll be prescribed medicines to bring your periods on time.

    Post-Procedure

Your doctor will recommend you to avoid any strenuous activity after the embryo transfer and before pregnancy test.

    More Info

Here are few common precautions that are recommended for almost everyone after embryo transfer into your womb:

    • Avoid all rigorous activities like lifting heavy weight, aerobics, workout, exercise and any activities that give forceful jerk to the body.
    • Refrain from consuming even small amounts of caffeine (found in tea and coffee) and alcohol as well as alcoholic products (all types).
    • Do not smoke
    • No sexual intercourse at least till the time pregnancy is confirmed.
    • Speak to your doctor before taking any medicines even ibuprofen or crocin.
    • Ditch those swimming sessions at the pool
    • No more long walks at shopping or with friends. Take as much rest as possible.
    • Take a break from stressful household work.
    • In case you are undergoing any other kind of medical treatment for diabetes, hypertension or arthritis, don’t hesitate to inform your doctor. The medication may interfere with IVF.
    • It may be a tough time for any. Ensure you always have a support at hand, maybe a close friend, spouse or family member who you can talk to. It doesn’t hurt to vent out your tension.
    • Stay calm and happy during the time. Focus on the positives but don’t mull too much on the results.
    • In case you experience any symptoms, immediately update your caregiver.
    • Practice meditation to calm your mind and body.
    • Don’t take any herbal or Ayurvedic medicine before taking an approval from your doctor.
    • Drink lot of water to stay hydrated and improve blood circulation.
    • Don’t forget to take your progesterone medication everyday and on the same time. This is necessary to ensure early and proper embryo implantation on the uterine lining.
    • If you are working or involved in traveling, take 10 days off and rest.
    • In case you are facing infertility issues, it is better to opt for IVF as early as possible because with growing age, quality of eggs will decrease, shrinking the chances of success.
