Description

The surgical procedure of removing excess fat from the body - from areas such as abdomen, buttocks, thighs, arms or neck - via a suction technique is known as Liposuction.

As you gain weight, there is increase in fat cells - by size and by volume. Liposuction is used to remove such fat cells. As a result, the procedure provides a contour to that particular body area till the weight does not increase abdruptly.

Liposuction is also called Body Contouring or Lipoplasty. The procedure can be performed via 3 techniques:

  • Tumescent Liposuction
  • Ultrasound assisted Liposuction
  • Powered Liposuction
Indication

Liposuction is mostly used for contouring or enhancing shape of a body area. It is not considered a weight loss procedure. It is used when you have too much fat is a particular area of your body. It is performed in arms, abdomen, buttocks, calves, chest, back, hips, thighs and neck when there are:

  • Fat bulges
  • Irregularities that exercise and diet cannot reduce

Sometimes it is also used in breast reduction.

Pre-Procedure

Liposuction can only be carried out when there are no health complications likes Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Diabetes, Blood flow problems or low immunity.

Your surgeon will check your medical history and ask for details of supplements and medications you are taking. You will be asked to stop consuming alcohol or tobacco (in any form) atleast a month before the procedure.

Photos might be taken before the surgery to compare the before and after conditions.

During-Procedure

Depending on that and on the amount of fat being removed, you will be given general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. The length of the procedure also depends on the amount of fat to be removed.

During the procedure you can expect:

  • Your doctor will mark the body area from which the fat has to be removed.
  • In Tumescent Liposuction technique, a solution will be inserted in the marked area. The solution generally is a mixture of salt water, epinephrine and lidocaine. This solution will swell and stiffen the area. After making the cut(s), a suction tube is inserted. A suction pump or a syringe is used to remove the excess fat, which is removed with the help of vacuum.
  • In Ultrasound Lipsuction, your doctor will insert a thin metal via cut in the marked area. Ultrasound waves will be passed through it to break and liquify the fat cells. In some cases tumescent and ultrasound techniques are used in conjunction.
  • Powered Liposuction is used for tough fat that has to be removed from arms, knees and ankles. In this technique a suction tube is inserted in the marked area. This tube moves back and forth rapidly thereby creating a vibration and removing the fat.
Post-Procedure

You can go back home a few hours after the surgery. Some of the things you can expect after the surgery are:

  • You will be made to wear a compression garment
  • You might feel bruising, swelling or pain.
  • Antibiotics might be given to avoid infection

You can go back to normal routine generally after a few days of the surgery. The time taken for the treated area to look less bulky is usually around 2 to 4 weeks.

Risk and Complication

Although rare, some of the possible complications and risks are:

  • Allergy from the medications
  • Temporary lumpiness
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clot
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Damage of tissues beneath the skin, which might look like a spot on the skin’s surface.
  • Discolouration of skin
  • Burns from the instruments used in the surgery
  • Numbness
  • Dead skin, or Skin Necrosis
  • Skin contours being uneven
  • Asymmetrical removal of fat
