Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to alter the appearance of the nose or improve its functioning or both. In commonly, the procedure is called Nose Job. It can help transform cartilage, bone, skin or all three, thereby changing the size, shape and proportion of the nose.
In most cases, nose job is performed as a voluntary cosmetic procedure. It can change the shape, size or proportions of your nose.
Rhinoplasty is also done to
Repair deformities caused due to injury
Correct a congenital defect
Improve functioning of nose and better the breathing process
Before the procedure, the surgeon will
Conduct blood tests to determine the impact on breathing
Conduct physical examination to determine the thickness of the skin inside and outside the nose
Recommend to stop taking blood thinning medicines, at least 7 to 10 days before the surgery
Strictly advise to quit smoking
Take photographs of the nose to discuss size and shape post-surgery
Depending on the complexity of the surgery, rhinoplasty may be performed under local or general anesthesia.
The surgery is either performed inside your nose or through a small cut between the nostrils at the base of your nose. The surgeon will readjust the cartilage and bone beneath the skin.
The surgeon may also increase the cartilage or nasal bone. Depending on the nose structure and materials present, the augmentation may differ. Rib cartilage or bone are used for augmentation requirements. For small changes, cartilage is harvested from deeper inside the nose or from the ear.
After the surgery, the patient is made to rest with head raised higher than chest. For supporting the nose, silicon pads will be put inside and splints will be taped outside.
For a few days after the surgery, there may be blood and mucus draining from the nose. In such cases, the doctor might put an absorption material outside the nose.
Following precautions are commonly recommended by the doctor
Avoid blowing the nose.
Avoid strenuous physical activities such as jogging and aerobics
Avoid extreme laughing
Increasing intake of high fiber food, such as vegetables and food to avoid constipation which can put strain on your nose
Gentle brushing of teeth
Final result of the nose job is seen within a few weeks to few months.
