Vasectomy is a form of male sterilization which involves blocking or surgical cutting of the tubes that release sperm from the testicles into the semen.
It is the easiest and safest form of male birth control for those couples who are sure that they do not want more children. In other words, it is the permanent form of male birth control. The procedure does not offer any protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
Vasectomy is almost 100% effective for male birth control, and is generally a voluntary procedure.
Most couples prefer vasectomy because the cost is much lesser than the cost of female sterilization.
In the first appointment, the doctor will ask the reasons to choose this form of birth control method and discuss fathering a child in the future.
The doctor will recommend to
Stop taking blood thinning drugs at least 10 days before the surgery
Take proper shower and wash thoroughly the genital area.
Bring an athletic supporter to wear it after the surgery for scrotum support and minimizing swelling.
Generally, the procedure takes less than 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. During the surgery, the doctor will
Make a minor incision on the upper part of the scrotum
Examine the tube, called vas deferens, that transports semen from testicles
Through puncture or incision a part of the vas deferens will be taken out, and will be cut
Using surgical clips or heat cauterizing method, the tube will be sealed and returned to its original position
Incision will be sutured
The patient can go home in a few hours, after the procedure. Swelling and pain are common for 2 to 3 days.
After going home, the doctor will recommend
Supporting the scrotum with a athletic supporter or bandage, for at least 2 days
Applying ice pack for 2 to 3 days
Avoiding swimming and bathing for a few days
Avoiding workout and sexual activity for a 7 to 10 days
Risk and Complication
• Swelling • Blood in your semen • Infection at the surgical area • Inflammation due to leaking sperm
Vasectomy usually costs upto INR 10,000 in top Indian hospitals.
