A study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has revealed that varicose veins have increased by 30 percent among younger adults as compared with the older population. Varicose veins is a condition that is associated with itchiness, pain or swelling in the legs that affects the quality of life. If left untreated, it can lead to serious implications and chronic conditions like blood clots or ulcers. .

According to Dr. Jathin Rai, a top rated radiologist and expert in vascular health has expressed that this shift is neither rare nor random. Infact, the rise of varicose veins is directly related to the sedentary lifestyle of people. Desk jobs, prolonged sitting or standing, poor posture or obesity directly reflects the unhealthy patterns responsible for varicose veins.

Varicose veins is a condition when veins under the walls of skins start getting visible, enlarged or twisted. This leads to weakening of veins that makes it difficult to carry out simple tasks like walking, standing or sitting. This condition highlights the high blood pressure flowing down the legs that affects the functioning of it.

People in urban populations are more prone to get affected with varicose veins. The challenge with this spike in cases comes when people usually ignore early symptoms due to lack of awareness. Symptoms such as heavy feeling in the leg, dark or purple visibility of veins, muscle cramping, swelling are often ignored by people. But these early signs of varicose veins if treated on time can save an occurrence of critical conditions.

However, varicose veins are not too complicated to heal. If diagnosed at an early stage, there are plenty of cost effective treatments. Treatment options like laser treatment, sclerotherapy or using venseal are so far considered the most effective options.  Dr. Jathin adds, ‘There are many minimal invasive procedures in today’s time that are convenient. Such options come with little discomfort and almost make one return to work immediately without any issue.’

He also adds that, ‘ Back in times, such problems were overlooked and attributed to genetics. But in today’s time, such problems are a reflection not only of a sedentary lifestyle but a warning to improve way of living. Varicose vein also highlights the problem of poor posture, not having an ideal way to sit or stand, or lack of exercise in daily life.  An active lifestyle is the first way to start the journey of healing.’

He advocates the ease of using minimally invasive procedures because they are cost effective, convenient and easy to take care of. Around 74 percent of the world population is dealing with varicose veins. Therefore, effective treatment of varicose veins are necessary to improve quality of life.

A simple stretching, correct posture or wearing compression stockings when required are effective measures to keep veins healthy. However, seeking timely intervention can help improve quality of life for a longer run. Therefore, take a proactive measure and visit vascular surgeon in Mumbai if the problems persist or symptoms start developing.
