Esophageal Cancer- Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Esophageal cancer arises when cancerous cells develop along the lining of the esophagus( food pipe). It is more common in men than women and the symptoms. It is more common in Asia and Africa than the Western countries.

Excessive tobacco and alcohol intake cause Esophageal Cancer. Very hot drinks and following a poor diet over an extended period of time, also are responsible causes or cancer.

Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer

  1. Difficulty and pain in swallowing

  3. Hoarse voice

  5. Blood in cough

  7. Heartburn

Diagnosis

The diagnosis for Esophageal Cancer is performed by BArium Swallow test and Endoscopy. Biopsy is done towards the end as a definitive test.

Treatment

This cancer ranges from Type 0 to Type IV with Type IV being the most invasive type. The treatment of this cancer is usually based on the stage of the cancer. Some of the treatment options that are followed are:

  1. Chemotherapy
  2. Radiation
  3. Photodynamic Therapy
  4. Surgery
  5. A combination of the above mentioned four options.
