The basic needs are air, water, and food and although air can be considered to be a pride depending on its quality, water and food cannot be considered to be so. From the food people obtain nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and many more. What happens when a person cannot consume or assimilate foods in the proper course by the gastrointestinal system? Below are some of the pre-requisites that could make it impossible for a person to eat normally and he or she has to depend on other methods of feeding for instance TPN nutrition.
Short Bowel Syndrome
The intestines are among the significant parts of your gastrointestinal system. You have quite a small intestine that digests your food, and quite a large colon that absorbs the nutrients to leave fecal matter behind. But for some reasons such as through injury or disease, an individual is likely to have a section of his or her intestine cut off. When you have had a section of the small intestine removed or you have had your small intestine damaged such that a massive portion is dysfunctional, it is referred to as short bowel syndrome.
Malabsorption Syndrome
Nutrients can only be taken by your small intestine absorb nutrients when you are taking a meal on the course of digestion. Such nutrients, if out to be absorbed by your small intestine, lead to a condition called malabsorption syndrome. It can present itself in the form of diarrhea and people suffer from loose feces all the time. This disorder may be as a result of other conditions like Crohn’s disease, which causes inflammation in the bowels. It can also happen from parasitic conditions as well. If some part of the bowel has been taken out, or resectioned off or if the bowel has been shortened then it impacts the food processing later on.
Bowel Resectioning
It only means you have bowel blockage that must be surgically eliminated if there is a major barrier in the passage of foods from the stomach to the small intestine. This may include a need to resect it following a diagnosis of colon or rectal cancer. If the stool has blood in it, this is one of the most recognized signs that you are experiencing a major issue together with your bowels for instance cancer or blockage. That was during resectioning, part of the intestine is cut during surgery, then two ends of the bowel join again. Sometimes the procedure may be carried out by making a long cut on the abdominal region. One of them is less invasive and it is laparoscopic surgery where the incisions are made in the abdomen. The surgeon then employs the help of arms that are endoscopic and inserted through those small cuts to do resectioning.
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis as a diagnosis is informing you that you have fatal illness which can influence several organs in your body. The most frequently invaded organs are from the alimentary canal and the generative and respiratory tracts. It normally affects the pancreas most of the time because the pancreas is responsible for digestion as well as regulation of blood sugar levels. Cystic fibrosis includes a symptom where a child produces thick mucus that is so hard to clear from the throat, chest or lungs. The point is that thick mucus can block these small ducts, which would alter the process of their secretion of digestive enzymes.
As you can see if a patient of one of the above diagnoses it can be rather frightening but it does not necessarily mean that you will never be able to eat or process food all together. There are other ways of nourishing the patients on temporary or permanent total parenteral nutrition using IV methods. Truly, TPN feeding can assist you if you’re a child or an adult with digestive problems and other severe diseases that affect a specific region of the digestive system. This kind of enteral nutrition can assist you in living and even in functioning with normal vitamins and minerals being administered directly to your veins.
