10 Signs of Unhealthy Body

Long before that trip to the hospital becomes an absolute necessity with a threatening illness, the body gives out a number of indications that it is not in the best of health. Pay attention to the following 10 signs of unhealthy body, to know if something is not right and control these symptoms from becoming a major health issue:

Unexplained Weight Loss

A loss of more than 10% of body weight without much change in physical activity and in a non-obese condition should be shown to a doctor. An unexplained drop in weight could be caused by a number of reasons like an over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism), depression, diabetes, liver disease, mal-absorption disorders (inability of body to absorb nutrients properly) or cancer. According to Dr Yogesh Batra,

Hyperthyroidism is a common cause of unexplained weight loss. Sweating, restlessness, increased appetite and decrease in concentration also accompany the condition.

High Fever

Fever is the body’s natural mechanism for fighting against infection. However, a fever of 103 degrees or higher must be shown to a doctor. Typically, it indicates a urinary tract infection, pneumonia, meningitis or endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of heart valves and chambers). A persistent low-grade fever that lasts more than three days too could signify certain infections such as sinus infection, tuberculosis or cancers like lymphoma or leukaemia.

Shortness of Breath

Shortness of breath very commonly signifies an underlying health problem. Exercise, obesity, high altitudes or extremes of temperatures could trigger it. If a person experiences sudden and severe episodes of shortness of breath, one must consult emergency medical care. According to a renowned pulmonologist in Mumbai,

Shortness of breath highlights medical conditions like bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), obstructive pulmonary disease or other lung and heart problems. An anxiety or panic attack can also trigger an episode of shortness of breath.

Diminished Appetite

One should consult a doctor if he feels full on a small portion of food or upon eating much less than what is normal. The feeling of fullness, also known as satiety, may be accompanied by vomiting, bloating, nausea or weight loss. According to an experienced gastroenterologist in Mumbai,

Possible causes for loss of appetite could be peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a more severe problem like pancreatic cancer.

Poor Sleep

Poor sleep is one of early signs of unhealthy body. A disturbed sleeping pattern or insomnia points towards a stressed state of mind and body. During sleep, the levels of the hormone cortisol gets lowered. However, under stressed conditions, the levels of cortisol go out of sync and are does not reduce during sleep. This hinders body’s repair process that takes places while its rests. When the body is not recharged after resting, it becomes vulnerable to other illnesses, as the immune system is not functioning optimally under such circumstances.

Fatigued all the Time

One could justify a tired feeling to extra work or exercise session during the day. However, chronic fatigue, one that does not go away even after a full night’s rest, could indicate a more serious medical problem like impaired thyroid functioning, burning out of the adrenal glands, toxin overload in the system due to poor diet and lifestyle choices, or other environmental exposures.

Stress or pressure on the nervous system could also cause your body’s repair mechanisms to work overtime to protect against infection, cancer and other illnesses.

Dark Yellow Urine

The color of urine can serve as a great indicator of to the general health. It is one the most signs of unhealthy body one should keep a check on. In a fully hydrated condition, urine is almost clear in color or a pale yellow. However, if it is dark yellow in color despite drinking enough water, it indicates some form of kidney disorder. It shows that the body’s waste are not being processed properly. If the urine color does not improve upon increasing water intake, one must consult a nephrologist to get kidney function checked.

Anxiety, Confusion or Change in Personality

A confused thought process, disorientation, difficulty in concentration, or sudden personality changes like becoming more aggressive could be the result of numerous health issues. These include anemia, low blood sugar, infection, dehydration or mental health disorder.

Sometimes, a confused state of mind can be a side effect of certain medications. Visit a doctor to understand the underlying cause; a severely confused state of mind accompanied by slurring or speech or weakness or numbness must be treated as emergency, as it indicates signs of a stroke.

Inconsistent Bowel Movement

Changes in bowel movement could also signify different health conditions. Watch out for:

  1. Persistent diarrhoea or constipation
  2. Unexplained urges for a bowel movement
  3. Bloody or black-coloured stools

Changes in bowel movement could be a result of bacterial infection by Salmonella or Campylobacter, or a viral or parasitic infection. It may also result from irritable bowel disease of cancer of the colon.

Prone to Cold & Flu

Everyone is exposed to bacteria and viruses every day. However, a healthy individual is able to ward off these pathogens most of the time. If a person is picking up colds more frequently, then the immune system may be weak. It could be due to a lack of vitamin C or an attack by a virus. A simple blood test can tell if there is anything to be concerned about. It will also show the right way to boost immune system and overall health.
