Bone marrow transplant is a procedure that replaces unhealthy bone marrow with a healthy one. Bone marrow is a soft sponge-like tissue present inside the bones containing hematopoietic stem cells or blood stem cells. They remain immature cells, which can form into different types of blood cells such as RBC, WBC, and platelets. Therefore, the bone marrow transplant procedure is also called a stem cell transplant as the new bone marrow carries blood stem cells.
People with less or improper functioning bone marrow needs a transplant to maintain body health. Bone marrow transplant in India is focussed on people with leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, who can have damaged bone marrow. Aplastic anaemia hinders new blood cells formed by the bone marrow. Chemotherapy for cancer can also damage bone marrow and its function. Genetic disorders such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia also cause an abnormal form of red blood cells and hemoglobin respectively.
Bone marrow transplant in India starts with chemotherapy to destroy the unhealthy or diseased cells and marrow. Ablative treatment involves the usage of chemotherapy or radiation to get rid of cancer cells. For older people, a low dosage of chemotherapy or radiation is used for the same.
The procedure is followed by transplanting healthy bone marrow through an intravenous (IV) line. The cells reach bone marrow on their own and start functioning to produce healthy blood cells. The level of genetic match between donor and recipient determines the success of bone marrow transplant.
The bone marrow transplants are three kinds based on the source of stem cells. Stem cells obtained from the same person before receiving chemotherapy and used after the procedure is called autologous bone marrow transplant. One receiving from another person is called an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. Umbilical cord blood transplant uses stem cells obtained from the newborn's cord blood.
The medical procedure is associated with certain short-lived risks as following
· Headache
· Nausea
· Pain
· Fever and chills
· Shortness of breath
· A decrease in blood pressure
The recovery time for a bone marrow transplant varies from three months to a year. Sometimes the complications can be severe and may stay with the rest of life.
· Graft-versus-host disease, in which the donor cells attack the body.
· Graft failure, where the transplanted cells fail to work properly
· Infection
· Anaemia
· Internal organ bleeding
