Description

A robotic radiosurgery system in which patients are operated in a non-invasive way to treat different types of tumors, it is non-surgical in nature as it involves treating the tumour with high dose radiation beams with great accuracy.

With the advent of cyberknife, the treatment of both types of tumours cancerous as well as non-cancerous in any part of the body became possible. Some of these body parts include brain, liver, spine, kidney, prostate and lung.

Indication

• Patients with relatively complex tumours or inoperable tumours. 
• Patients looking for an alternative to surgery.

Pre-Procedure
  • The body of the patient undergoes a high resolution CT scan in order to know and verify the exact shape, size and location of the tumour.
  • The result of the scan is then uploaded to the cyberknife system.
  • A unique treatment plan would be designed by the specialists to treat the tumour and to go ahead with the procedure.
During-Procedure
  • The treatment is done under the supervision and direction of a team of radiation oncologist, medical physicists and cyberknife physicians. The patient is made to sit comfortably on a chair while the cyberknife machine moves slowly around the patient’s body. The accurate radiation beams focus on the tumour or the cancerous cells while not harming the surrounding tissues or cells. The patient does not have to wear any frames during the procedure. Cyberknife treatment does not require anaesthesia.
  • It generally takes 30-90 minutes for the treatment however; the patient might have to repeat the sessions over several days.
Post-Procedure

The patient can continue with his daily routine. Post sessions the patient will be needed to follow up with his/her oncologist.

Risk and Complication
  • If the complication occurs, its frequency will be very less and severity will be very mild.
  • The risks and complications include headache, nausea and fatigue post surgery. However, these symptoms are temporary.
  • Few symptoms may occur after a delay for example, swelling, scarring or inflammation in the region being treated or surrounding tissue region.
